Low Temperature and Hospitalizations for Cardiovascular and Respiratory Diseases in Brazil

Thematic axes
5 - Fostering Human and Social Development

Our study analyzed the relationship between cold temperatures and hospitalizations for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in Brazil (2008–2018). A quasi-Poisson regression model adjusted for environmental factors was used. Cold was associated with a 17% increase in hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases and a 7% increase for respiratory diseases, especially among older adults. These findings reinforce the need for cold-adaptation policies, often overlooked in tropical countries.
