Maternal Heat Exposure and Congenital Malformations in Brazil

Thematic axes
5 - Fostering Human and Social Development

Our study examined the relationship between ambient temperature and the risk of congenital malformations in more than 11 million births (2001–2018). A logistic regression model was used to assess the association between extreme heat and birth defects. The study found that high temperatures during the first trimester of pregnancy increased the risk of anomalies in the circulatory and digestive systems. These results underscore the importance of considering environmental impacts on maternal and child health.
