Atlantic Forest Connection

5 - Fostering Human and Social Development

In August 2019, FGVces was selected through a public call to provide consultancy services under the project “Restoration of Climate and Biodiversity Services in the Southeastern Corridor of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest” – Conexão Mata Atlântica, whose objective is to enhance biodiversity and water protection and to combat climate change. To this end, the project promotes activities focused on native vegetation conservation, the adoption of more productive systems, and the improvement of conservation unit management.

The Conexão Mata Atlântica initiative worked with more than 250 rural producers located in areas defined by the project, distributed across the buffer zones of four Conservation Units: the São Francisco Xavier Environmental Protection Area, in the municipality of São José dos Campos (SP); the Bananal Ecological Station, covering part of the municipality of Bananal (SP); the Santa Virgínia Nucleus of the Serra do Mar State Park, in the municipalities of Natividade da Serra and São Luiz do Paraitinga (SP); and the Itariru Nucleus of the Serra do Mar State Park, covering parts of the municipalities of Miracatu, Pedro de Toledo, Itariri, and Peruíbe (SP).

FGVces’s work focused on one of the components of the Conexão Mata Atlântica project — Sustainable Value Chains — aimed at supporting the project’s beneficiary farmers in the economic viability of sustainable productive activities carried out around the participating Conservation Units. Some of the value chains covered include native fruits (such as juçara, cambuci, abiu, grumixama, and pine nuts); pulps, jams, and preserves; meliponiculture (stingless native bees); seeds and seedlings of forest species; ornamental plants (orchids, bromeliads, palms, among others); medicinal and/or aromatic extracts, liqueurs and beverages; and non-conventional edible plants (PANCs).
