FGV Begins Participation in COP30 with Publications and Daily Presence in Multiple Panels
Fundação Getulio Vargas has officially launched its activities at COP30, the global conference that brings together world leaders to discuss solutions to climate change. With a focus on supporting the development of mitigation and adaptation measures based on scientific evidence, FGV’s participation includes initiatives aimed at producing and disseminating knowledge, as well as the presence of experts in thematic panels.
Among its contributions is the FGV Climate Agenda, a platform that brings together projects, research, and initiatives aligned with the goals of COP30. The website consolidates FGV’s contributions to the global climate agenda in a single space, offering exclusive content and a portfolio structured around strategic themes such as sustainability, energy transition, bioeconomy, and more. The goal is to provide organized information to support decision-making by governments, companies, and civil society. The platform can be accessed [here].
The platform also features the digital version of IMPACTOS – Special COP30 Edition, a magazine presenting 14 articles written by over 40 researchers from various institutions, addressing the six pillars of the COP30 Action Agenda. It also includes an interview with Dan Ioschpe, Climate High Level Champion of the conference, discussing the role of the private sector in climate change mitigation.
During COP30, FGV researchers are participating in panels across different areas of the conference, including the Blue Zone, Green Zone, and Agrizone, discussing topics such as decarbonization, education for sustainability, financing mechanisms, adaptation, and resilient cities.
FGV also has two COP30 Special Envoys: Marcelo Behar, researcher at São Paulo Law School (FGV Direito SP), serving as Special Envoy for Bioeconomy, and Roberto Rodrigues, FGV Emeritus Professor and Special Envoy for Agriculture.
A Solutions Agenda for Climate Action: Sustainable Agriculture and Responsible Mining
FGV’s first panel took place on November 10, featuring Marcelo Behar at the event A Solutions Agenda for Climate Action: Sustainable Agriculture and Responsible Mining, held in the Blue Zone.
Organized in partnership with Instituto Arapyaú, the Institut du Développement Durable et des Relations Internationales (IDDRI), the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), and the Climate and Sustainable Development Network of Nigeria (CSDevNet), the event explored solutions to accelerate Climate Action, focusing on innovations introduced under Brazil’s COP30 Presidency to address historical challenges in the UNFCCC process and strengthen the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
“We’ve been waiting for this moment to build a robust agenda and connect all the commitments made in previous COP editions. We all know that the COP’s origins trace back to Brazil in 1992, and it took a long time to consolidate previous agreements, structure a global plan, and tackle the challenge of the 38 billion tons of emissions we’re producing. The major effort now is to connect nations and integrate this agenda with the world of finance. That’s the work the COP30 Presidency has been leading on multiple fronts,” Behar stated.
According to the researcher, one of the greatest challenges is aligning the climate agenda with the nature agenda:
“And the most promising response to that has been the Tropical Forest Forever Facility,” Behar emphasized.
The new mechanism proposed by Brazil’s Presidency is a financing model that combines public and private investment, aiming to channel resources to tropical forest countries committed to preserving these areas.
“There are specific characteristics in tropical regions that we need to consider, and they will help us achieve the global goals already on the table. Brazilian agriculture is powerful, and if we shift from fertilizers and pesticides to bio-inputs, we’ll be creating a stock of 908,000,000 carbon credits. That’s what we need—measures like this must be reinforced by the market,” Behar declared.
