The Center for Climate Risk Studies, Adaptation and Mitigation (FGV Climate Risk) was established to measure, predict, and manage the economic and financial impacts of extreme weather events in Brazil.
By combining climate science, econometrics, and financial sector expertise, FGV Climate Risk bridges scientific research and decision-making. The Center seeks to transform complex geospatial and climate data into analytical tools for public policy, regulation, urban risk management, and solutions for the insurance and infrastructure sectors.
As disasters become more frequent and information on economic losses remains fragmented, FGV Climate Risk develops quantitative methods to measure not only direct damage but also indirect and systemic impacts on society and the economy.
-
Pillar I — Physical Risk, Vulnerability, and Losses: Quantitative modeling of the probability and severity of extreme events to estimate territorial vulnerabilities and direct economic losses, with a particular focus on agricultural risk modeling and agricultural insurance.
-
Pillar II – Climate Econometrics and Forecasting Under Instability: Application of high-dimensional econometric methods and spatiotemporal models to understand climate regime shifts, non-stationarity, and the propagation of environmental shocks across regions.
-
Pillar III – Macrofinancial Risk, Insurance, and Policy Evaluation: Analysis of climate impacts on financial stability, development of climate stress tests, parametric insurance solutions, and risk-transfer mechanisms for vulnerable regions.
-
Pillar IV – Carbon Markets and Institutional Resilience: Applied research on regulatory instruments for the climate transition, carbon markets, and the resilience of digital infrastructure and critical systems to disasters.
FGV Climate Risk is also the founder and organizer of the FGV Climate Resilience Forum, an ongoing multidisciplinary platform that brings together leaders from the public and private sectors, the insurance industry, academia, and nonprofit organizations to develop practical recommendations and evidence-based policy guidance reports.
