Urban Ecosystem Restoration in Manaus-AM: Promoting Urban Agriculture in Urban Planning Processes
In its efforts to accelerate sustainable urban transitions, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has increasingly turned to the power of nature-based solutions. In 2023, UNEP’s Cities Unit launched a new project entitled Generation Restoration (2023–2025), aimed at implementing a set of measures to address selected political, technical, and financial challenges in order to promote large-scale ecosystem restoration—particularly in urban areas—within the framework of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration and the Global Biodiversity Framework.
In this context, FGVces and the Municipal Secretariat for Environment and Sustainability (SEMMAS) of the City of Manaus will collaborate to deliver the second component of the Generation Restoration project, which seeks to build the capacity and inspire stakeholders in the city (government agencies, the private sector, and NGOs/civil society organizations at all levels) to replicate and scale up urban ecosystem restoration initiatives. Specifically, FGVces and the Manaus City Hall will work together to strengthen public policy coordination, governance, and community engagement, with a focus on urban and peri-urban agriculture.
