FGV Promotes Debate on Evidence-Based Public Policies During Amazon Week
From 1 to 6 June, Brussels, Paris, Berlin, and London will host Amazon Week, an initiative that places the Amazon at the centre of global discussions on climate change and sustainable development. Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) will host panels in Brussels on 3 and 5 June, aiming to advance dialogues on evidence-based public policies with a focus on the Amazon region.
FGV's programme reinforces cooperation between Brazil and Europe by bringing together researchers, government officials, and civil society representatives from both regions to discuss topics such as bioeconomy, just transition, and climate resilience. The proposal seeks to explore pathways that reconcile economic development, environmental preservation, and social inclusion, with an emphasis on nature-based solutions and public policy instruments capable of transforming environmental assets into tangible benefits for local populations.
The panels will cover a range of subjects, from metrics for emissions reduction and payment for environmental services to strategies for integrating local producers and the sustainable use of biodiversity as drivers of socio-economic development. Discussions will also encompass resilient Amazonian cities, telemedicine, climate extremes, and forest fire monitoring, consistently focusing on the formulation of evidence-based public policies and scientific cooperation between Brazil and the European Union.
To enrich the debates, FGV has invited leading Brazilian and European institutions, including research centres, international organisations, and entities dedicated to sustainable development. Participants include the WWF, CEMADEN, UFMG, Bruxelles International, and Trias Brazil, alongside collaboration with government bodies such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), and the European Union's Joint Research Centre (JRC).
