Amazônia+10 - Innovation for Sustainable Value Creation: Understanding Global Value Chains in the Amazon

Thematic axes
2 - Stewarding Forests, Oceans and Biodiversity

This transdisciplinary project addresses the challenges and opportunities involved in developing innovative strategies for sustainable value creation that integrate economic, social, and environmental perspectives within Global Value Chains (GVCs) anchored in the Amazon, where local communities and enterprises are embedded. An analytical framework will be developed to study these global value chains in the Amazon and to analyze their future developments, including the influence of new technologies, trade policies, and the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Within the GVCs, the study will assess their socio-ecological impacts, transitions toward sustainable management, circular production, engagement with sustainable products based on forest resources and community leadership, and the involvement of socially conscious consumers. The research focuses on three sectoral systems in which the focal value chains are embedded in the Amazon: Cosmetics, Fisheries, and Beef. In these GVCs, we will analyze the strategies of companies and communities related to innovation, governance, and institutions, as well as the future challenges of innovation and sustainability in the post-pandemic era in light of climate challenges.

In addition to engaging local stakeholders in co-producing the research and training new researchers, the project seeks to promote knowledge sharing. It aims to improve business structures, community initiatives, and public policies both in the Brazilian Amazon and in similar contexts elsewhere.
