Belt + Green

Thematic axes
3 - Transforming Agriculture and Food Systems

The consequences of the climate crisis are already part of the daily reality for family farmers and organizations within the food supply chain. There are numerous cases of agricultural losses caused by prolonged droughts, heavy rainfall, and rising average temperatures. Beyond the social and economic damages that directly affect household incomes, production losses also disrupt the food supply to cities and lead to fluctuations in food prices.

For family farmers, such climate variations represent not only increased threats to production but also a deepening of their vulnerabilities. Therefore, understanding and preparing for growing local and regional climate unpredictability is a crucial tool in building the resilience of small-scale farms—essential to the social cohesion of rural areas and the food supply of major urban centers.

In this context, the Cinturão+Verde Project aims to promote climate change adaptation through family farming in São Paulo’s Green Belt, one of Brazil’s main hubs for fruit and vegetable production.

For a Greener Belt: Climate Change Adaptation through Family Farming in São Paulo’s Green Belt
On June 28, an event was held to present the main results of the first cycle of the Cinturão+Verde Project, sponsored by the Citi Foundation. The meeting took place at the Parelheiros School of Agroecology and brought together family farmers, as well as representatives from producer organizations, civil society, government, companies, and research and educational institutions.
