Cities and climate change
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is preparing a Special Report on Climate Change and Cities, as part of its Seventh Assessment Cycle (AR7). This report will provide crucial insights into the role of cities in climate change, including climate impacts and risks, as well as adaptation and mitigation solutions that can be implemented to minimize them.
The Special Report, scheduled for release in 2027, will consist of five chapters authored by 97 experts from 56 countries. José A. Puppim de Oliveira serves as one of the Coordinating Lead Authors of Chapter 4 – “How to Facilitate and Accelerate Change”, supported by a Chapter Scientist (Ana Paula, Ph.D. candidate at FGV EBAPE), who assists with the report’s logistics, including document standardization, reference compilation and organization, and other operational activities.
Throughout the process, the team participates in four Lead Author Meetings (LAMs), where discussions are held on the chapter content and improvements following review rounds. The first meeting took place in Osaka, Japan, from March 10–14, 2025, and the second meeting will be held in Mombasa, Kenya, from July 21–25, 2025.
