Decarbonization Pathways for Brazil

Thematic axes
1 - Transitioning Energy, Industry, and Transport

The study Decarbonization Pathways, developed by FGV with support from the banking sector, sought to fill a methodological gap by constructing scenarios of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals for soy, corn, and beef cattle production chains through 2050. Tropical agriculture has specific characteristics that are often not captured by international methodologies. Financial institutions, when setting decarbonization targets for the agricultural sector, require technical parameters aligned with the Brazilian context.
The modeling used, based on a territorial approach, indicates a potential reduction of more than 50% in emissions across these production chains. This provides a methodological foundation for financial institutions and companies purchasing agricultural products to align their climate targets with the tropical context.
The study is based on the adoption of technologies such as no-till farming, pasture recovery, and crop-livestock integration, as outlined in the ABC+ Plan, and considers the impact of land-use change.
