Research Project

Indicators of Juruti and Sustainable Juruti

Thematic axes
4 - Building Resilience for Cities, Infrastructure and Water

The project is derived from the “Juruti Sustentável” model, a local development proposal resulting from an invitation by Alcoa to FGVces and the Brazilian Biodiversity Fund (Funbio) to design a long-term local development model for the municipality of Juruti, in the state of Pará, which at the time was undergoing major and profound changes with the arrival of the company for a bauxite mining project in the region.

The “Juruti Sustentável” model is based on four premises and a three-pillar intervention structure. The premises include (i) broad and effective participation of society; (ii) a territorial approach for diagnosing the transformations generated by the implementation of the mine in Juruti; (iii) recognition that these transformations occur within a broader context of regional development dynamics; and (iv) the need for continuous internalization of sustainability within the company. The intervention structure encompasses (i) the creation and coordination of a space for social mobilization, (ii) the development of indicators to monitor social, environmental, and economic changes in Juruti and the surrounding region, and (iii) the establishment of a fund to support local development projects.

In 2007, FGVces was invited by Alcoa to develop the monitoring indicators, while parallel initiatives advanced the implementation of the other two pillars of the model. With the premises of “Juruti Sustentável” as guiding principles, FGVces faced two major challenges: developing the indicators through a process that ensured broad and effective participation of the local community and designing a methodology to define the monitoring territory.
